Boston's Defeater, fronted by Derek Archambault, debuted with an ambitious
form of
progressive hardcore
on the album
Travels (2008), notably in
Prophet in Plain Clothes and the
six-minute closer Cowardice,
and on the six-song 20-minute EP Lost Ground (2009), a concept album of sorts about a black war veteran.
They turned to more conventional punk-pop on
Empty Days & Sleepless Nights (2011),
Letters Home (2013),
Abandoned (2015) and
Defeater (2019).
