North Carolina's singer-songwriter and guitarist Jake Xerxes Fussell
revisited the century-old folk tradition of the south on
Jake Xerxes Fussell (2015), backed by
pedal steel, upright bass, fiddle and drumming, with his version of forgotten folk songs like All In Down & Out.
He stood up as the Ry Cooder of his generation
on What in the Natural World (2017) and
Out of Sight (2019), with his cover of Oh Captain (a 1920s song).
These albums sound as if they had just been discovered by John Lomax in rural villages of the south.
Good and Green Again (2022), produced by James Elkington,
feels less archaic and less authentic.
