London's quartet Goat Girl, fronted by vocalist and guitarist Lottie Pendlebury,
who sings with the annoyed tone of a cabaret chanteuse of the 1920s,
debuted with the singles Country Sleaze/ Scum (2016) and Crow Cries (2017),
and the EP Udder Sounds (2018), with the comical Cracker Drool and the rocking The Man,
songs that bridged
the agit-pop of the Raincoats
and the spaceage-pop of Stereolab with
biting social commentary a` la Kinks.
The 19-song album Goat Girl (2018), containing the old singles
Country Sleaze,
Cracker Drool and
The Man as well as the
country-psychedelic ballad Throw Me a Bone (2018),
increased their mass appeal,
but perhaps the standout is the
lethargic litany Viper Fish with moderate surges of garage-rock.
On All Fours (2021) contains "only" 13 songs but is actually a longer album than the debut. The
danceable polyrhythmic synth-pop Sad Cowboy
and the etheral singalong Badibaba are the consummable songs, while
Where Do We Go From Here? and
Jazz in the Supermarket represent their alternative take on the
Brit-pop stereotype.
