Chicago's trio Horsegirl, consisting of Penelope Lowenstein (guitar, vocals), Nora Cheng (guitar, vocals) and Gigi Reece (drums),
offered a timid imitation of the new-wave of the late 1970s on
the EP Ballroom Dance Scene et Cetera (2020)
and the album
Versions of Modern Performance (2022), produced by John Agnello.
Anti-glory evokes Television with Debora Iyall (Romeo Void) on vocals.
Dirtbag Transformation is bubble-gum pop wed to
Sonic Youth.
Billy is sloppy shoegazing rock,
World Of Pots and Pans is super-sloppy bedroom-pop.
The dual vocals of Nora Cheng and Penelope Lowenstein are disorienting enough
to keep the momentum going,
but mostly this is an amateurish imitation of the originals.
Steve Shelley and Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth play on two songs.
