New York's rapper Shayna "Junglepussy" McHayle,
a fashion graduate from the Fashion Institute of Technology,
rose to prominence with the single Cream Team (2012) and the
mixtape Satisfaction Guaranteed (2014), on which she
exuded feminine self-confidence and even arrogance.
The dilated, almost stoned, atmospheres of
Want Some Mo, Fuck Texting and Kick It
cheeky attitude Nah
contrast with surreal rigmaroles such as Bling Bling and
Satisfaction Guaranteed.
Her rap being little more than a plain spoken-word style, she owed her
cult following to her lyrics and to her beats.
That was especially the case for the album
Pregnant with Success (2015), mostly produced by
Texas-born New York City-based producer Alex "Shy Guy" Govenar
with a variety of creative beats.
The fierce musical posture of Country Boy and Dear Diary doesn't
prevent
melodic moments like 'Bout You and Only Way, while unconventional
beats embellish the frenzied Get To Steppin' and the
madcap Nothing For Me.
The result is certainly inferior to the debut mixtape.
She hired a variety of producers to craft the lethargic (and much more conventional) rap-soul ballads of
JP3 (2018) and
JP4 (2020), like Showers on the former
and
Out My Window on the latter.
The latter also includes the sinister dub-infected beat of
Spiders, produced by Nick Hook.
The EP JP5000 (2020) further abstracted her recitation, with Mystical wrapped in an oneiric jazzy atmosphere.
