Lake Street Dive, formed in Boston by
vocalist Rachael Price, multi-instrumentalist Mike "McDuck" Olson, bassist Bridget Kearney, and drummer Mike Calabrese,
but based in New York,
debuted with the lukewarm
of In This Episode (2007) and
Promises Promises (2008).
They perfected their smooth, mellow, soul-pop-jazz fusion on
Lake Street Dive (2010), with Hello Goodbye, My Heart's In The Right Place and Neighbor Song, songs propelled by Price's powerful jazzy vocals (she also released albums of jazz covers).
They became famous for their cover of the
Jackson 5's I Want You Back, included in their EP of covers Fun Machine (2012).
After Bad Self Portraits (2014), with Bad Self Portraits and You Go Down Smooth,
Side Pony (2016), produced by Dave Cobb, veered towards a more danceable sound with
the exuberant Godawful Things (modeled after Tamla's sound of the 1960s),
the funky Side Pony,
and the Gloria Naylor-esque disco-music of Call Off Your Dogs.
However, the gospel-y How Good it Feels,
the raunchy blues vibrations of I Don't Care About You and
the Joe Cocker-ian soul-rock of Close to Me legitimized their
roots-rock credentials.
Good Kisser is the soul-tinged power-ballad
off the mediocre Free Yourself Up (2018), having added keyboardist Akie Bermiss to the lineup.
The same quintet recorded Obviously (2021), produced by Mike Elizondo,
that contains the lame disco ditty Hypotheticals that turned them into pop stars and mostly songs in that tedious funk-soul style.
Price's voice shines in the bombastic ballad Nobody's Stopping You Now amid orchestral arrangements and in the country-soul
Feels Like The Last Time, backed by a doo-wop choir.
After the album was released, Olson left and guitarist James Cornelison joined.
