Arlo Parks (real name Anais Marinho), a bisexual singer-songwriter
raised in London by Nigerian/Chadian-French parents,
debuted and became famous with the single Cola (2018).
The EPs Super Sad Generation (2019) and
Sophie (2019) laid the foundation for her first
album Collapsed in Sunbeams (2021),
released when was still only 20.
The songs, with texts characterized by diaristic intimacy, introduce
yet another sophisticated soul singer a` la Sade via
mid-90s trip-hop and neosoul of the 2000s.
The hypnotic ballad Black Dog is the highlight, and
Eugene the other single.
Her colloquial vocals shine in unpretentious undulating ballads like
Bluish and
For Violet.
The funky elements that animate Hope and Too Good
reveal another side of the singer, potentially a more interesting one.
