Minnesota's pow-wow singer Joe Rainey, a member of an "Indian" tribe,
debuted as a singer-songwriter with
Niineta (2022), a collection of powerful stories held together by
his melismatic invocations, further "estranged" by a dissonant and sometimes
orchestral production (courtesy of Andrew Broder of
Fog).
B.E. Son sounds like a glitchy recording of a choral gospel chant.
While the singing packs a lot of emotion, alternating desperate and moribund tones, in
Bezhigo, the backing explores a vast range of possible sounds, from
industrial noise to neoclassical strings.
The jubilant Jr Flip relies more on hand-clapping than on the electronic
backing and in fact the synth-based finale sabotages the atmosphere.
Unfortunately the novelty wears out quickly and most of the songs rely on trivial production tricks.
The eleven-minute Phil's Offering ends up being mostly a jam of glitch-electronica.
