Nigerian singer-songwriter Tems (real name Temilade Openiyi) rose to prominence
with the EP For Broken Ears (2020), containing the danceable single Damages, but especially
the stately, a-cappella, hymn-like Interference and
the claustrophobic neosoul ballad The Key.
Her vocal style was further publicized by
high-profile collaborations with WixKid (Essence, 2021) and Blake (Fountains, 2021).
Her five-song EP If Orange Was a Place (2021) contains inferior
material like
the single Crazy Tings (ignoble Caribbean pop produced by Ghanaian producer Ronald "GuiltyBeatz" Banful) and the smooth and jazzy Found.
Nonetheless, she gets a chance or two to demonstrate her vocal skills, notably
in Replay, for which star producer Jonah Christian architects a
hyper-funky beat.
