New York-based singer-songwriter Lil Peep, aka Gustav Ahr (1996),
was the quintessential white "emo" hero of his decade, almost like
the white counterpart to XXXTentacion.
He emerged on the online platform
SoundCloud with a wave of rappers that talked about drugs and their
(self-inflicted) depression.
The three-song EP Feelz (may 2015) contains two
conventional hip-hop songs but also his first existential manifesto,
Life.
His first mixtape Lil Peep Part One (december 2015), on the other
hand, turned depression and drugs into high art like few musicians
have been able to do since the days of
Nirvana.
He raps the stoned sorrowful trance Praying To The Sky
in a desolate soundscape reminiscent of
Tim Buckley,
and he crucifies himself in the horror cinematic atmosphere of Five Degrees,
but he also sings the angelic elegy The Way I See Things
(his self-portrait as a lonely philosophizing drug-addict)
and the lyrical martial-paced Nothing To U.
His viscous melodies
explore deep depression in a more ambiguous way than, say,
the monotonous Nick Drake
or
the eccentric Syd Barrett did.
He glides over it, elegant and weightless, like a drowning corpse that cannot
resist the drift.
He can even be rousing, like when he
wraps his moaning around the anthemic guitar riff of High School
(reminiscent of Gram Parsons' Love Hurts)
and intones the stately Neil Young-ian meditations It's Me and Shame On U.
His vocal skills allow him a broad range of excursions, from the
acid-folk of Wanna Be to the synth-poppy Ghost Boy,
and is best displayed by
the dreamy sadness of Veins,
halfway between singing and rapping.
Another Song features a sample of Kurt Cobain discussing suicide.
There is much less magic on the other
mixtape of the same month, Live Forever (11 december 2015).
Angeldust is another stoned trance-y litany but with echoes of Nirvana and the Doors.
Mirror Mirror is, if possible, even more drowsy and desolate.
The tedious soul ballad Nuts is redeemed by the poignant
Vibe.
The six-song EP California Girls (january 2016) included more
mature forms of expression, like the mix of rap and singing in
California World over a distorted organ drone,
and the vibrant singalong Pray I Die over grating guitar sounds and ominous beats;
but also more streamlined raps like Beamerboy
and more melodic litanies like Let Me Bleed.
The piano-driven rap of Lil Kennedy
(one of his earliest singles) embodied the deepest essence of his melancholia.
Two days later he released the vastly inferior four-song EP Vertigo (january 2016).
In the same year he released a dozen singles, including:
Gym Class,
About U,
Kiss,
Giving Girls Cocaine,
and
I Crash U Crash.
Lil Peel tried to sound more entertaining on his third mixtape,
Crybaby (june 2016), still sparsely arranged but louder and faster.
The vein of the first album is simply spruced up in songs like
Crybaby.
But elsewhere he tries to be more melodic, like in
Yesterday that, despite using only guitar and handclap, winks at
bubblegum pop, and in Big City Blues.
Songs like Ghost Girl
are nested inside more conventional rap and ballad structures,
and a more lively and rhythmic approach characterizes
Absolute in Doubt and White Tee.
While the arrangements are still spartan and essential, there are attempts
at a more sophisticated production, like in Falling 4 Me.
Angst is beginning to sound hummable and danceable.
His fourth mixtape, Hellboy (september 2016), continued the trend with
conventional songs such as the sleepy Hellboy and Girls and
the rap Cobain; but most of the album veered towards a new synthesis.
The angst-filled Nirvana-esque rants The Song They Played and Walk Away As The Door Slams are balanced by the folk singalongs Worlds Away (one of his melodic peaks) and The Last Thing I Wanna Do
and the frequent nods at soul-pop balladry (notably We Think Too Much).
The peaks of pathos can be found in
OMFG, a visceral ode to suicide,
Drive-By, an effective marriage of hypnotic and surreal elements,
and in the guitar-driven folk elegy Gucci Mane.
There is even Interlude, a downcast blues-rock shuffle reminiscent of the Doobie Brothers.
He was clearly focusing more on the music and less on the whining.
Lil Peep also enganged in a great number of mostly mediocre collaborations.
The notable exception was the collaborated with Lil Tracy, who had
already featured in tracks such as The Song They Played and
Walk Away As The Door Slams.
That collaboration yielded the single Backseat (2016) and two
EPs: Castles (2016) contains the
alienated atmosphere Pain and the
sophisticated vocal game of Castles,
although most attention went to the more conventional White Wine;
and the even better Castles II (2017) contains the
catchy and poignant Dying Out West,
the pensive and tender Past the Castle Walls,
and the noir melodrama WitchBlades, three of the high points of
Lil Peep's career.
The 24-minute mini-album Come Over When You're Sober Pt 1 (2017)
made his sound and his story more fashionable for the masses, but the
melodic hip-hop Save That Shit and the
over-produced emo-pop of Awful Things and The Brightside
lost much of the angst along the way.
On one hand, Lil Peep plunges into
the exaggerated neurosis of U Said but then crafts the
trivial singalong Better Off.
Benz Truck is the only quintessential Lil Peep litany.
The album also saw the release of the singles
Benz Truck Pt 2 (2017) and
Avoid (2017).
He died of overdose in November 2017 at the age of 21.
The following year Smokeasac assembled the album
Come Over When You're Sober Pt 2 (2018), an
awkward commercial speculation that marketed Lil Peep for the
dancefloor (Broken Smile),
and turned him into a rocker (Cry Alone)
and a shouter (Leanin) and a reggae bard (Hate Me);
with some remixes of old songs (e.g., Life Is Beautiful, a remix of Life).
posthumous released mediocre collaborations with
XXXTentacion (Falling Down) and iLoveMakonnen (Sunlight on Your Skin).

Il cantante-cantautore newyorkese Lil Peep, all'anagrafe Gustav
esistenziale, Life.
angelica The Way I See Things (il suo autoritratto di drogato solitario
Drake o dell'eccentrico Syd Barrett.
meditazioni a là Neil Young di It's Me e Shame On U. Le sue
Another
C'è molta meno magia nell'altro mixtape dello stesso mese,
Live Forever (11 december 2015). Angeldust
snelli come Beamerboy e litanie più melodiche come Let Me Bleed.
di singoli, inclusi: Gym Class, About U, Kiss, Giving Girls Cocaine e
I Crash U Crash.
mixtape Crybaby (june 2016), ancora
scarsamente organizzato, ma più potente e veloce. La vena del primo album viene
semplicemente abbozzata in brani come Crybaby.
Blues.
caratterizza Absolute, In Doubt e White Tee.
produzione più sofisticata, come in Falling 4 Me. Angst inizia a
suonare canticchiabile e ballabile.
I rantoli rabbiosi a là Nirvana di The Song They
Played e Walk Away As The Door Slams sono bilanciati dalle cantilene
folk Worlds Away (uno dei suoi picchi melodici) e The Last Thing I
Wanna Do, e dai frequenti rimandi alla ballata soul-pop (in particolare We
Think Too Much).
che lo aveva già accompagnato in tracce come The Song They Played e Walk
Away As The Door Slams.
Wine; e Castles II (2017), ancora meglio, contiene l'orecchiabile e
commovente Dying Out West, la riflessiva e tenera Past the Castle
Shit e l'emo-pop super-prodotto di Awful Things e The Brightside
Off.
L'anno seguente Smokeasac assemblò l'album Come Over When You're Sober Pt 2 (2018),
Life Is Beautiful, un remix di Life).
Posthumos pubblicò collaborazioni mediocri con XXXTentacion (Falling Down) e
iLoveMakonnen (Sunlight on Your Skin).
Ultimi singoli buoni: 4
Gold Chains, Cry Alone e Runaway (2018).
Everybody's Everything (2019) è una compilation.
